Kayaking Lake Acworth: A Local Guide

If you're looking for a peaceful place to kayak near Atlanta, Lake Acworth is one of our favorites.

It's a smaller, quieter lake in Acworth, Georgia, with calm water, plenty of shoreline to explore, and no motorized boats. That makes it an especially comfortable place for beginners or anyone who simply wants a slower day on the water.

We spend a lot of time paddling Lake Acworth, and these are the things we think are helpful to know before you go.

Is Lake Acworth Good for Beginner Kayakers?

Yes. Lake Acworth is one of the places we recommend most for new paddlers.

Because motorized boats aren't allowed on the lake, you don't have to deal with the wakes and heavier boat traffic you'll find on some of the larger lakes around North Georgia.

There are still real outdoor conditions to consider, including wind, weather and changing water conditions, but on a good day Lake Acworth is a wonderful place to get comfortable in a kayak.

Where Can You Launch a Kayak at Lake Acworth?

There are several public access points around Lake Acworth. Two we regularly use are South Shore Park and Overlook Park.

Before heading out, check current City of Acworth information for parking, park hours and any applicable rules or fees, since these can change.

And remember that your launch point is also your return point, so keep your distance and conditions in mind as you explore.

What Is It Like to Kayak Lake Acworth?

One of the things we love about Lake Acworth is that you don't need to cover a huge distance to have an interesting paddle.

Take your time along the shoreline and you'll start noticing how much is happening around you.

Depending on the season, you may spot turtles, herons and other water birds, fish below the surface and plenty of the smaller details that are easy to miss from land.

It's also a great reminder that kayaking doesn't always have to be about getting somewhere. Sometimes the best paddle is simply slowing down enough to notice what's around you.

What Should You Bring?

You don't need a complicated gear list for a recreational paddle, but you should come prepared.

Bring a properly fitted PFD, drinking water, sun protection, weather-appropriate clothing and a way to keep your phone and valuables dry. Check the weather before launching and always consider wind and changing conditions, not just the temperature or chance of rain.

If you're new to kayaking, learning a few basic paddle strokes and safety skills before heading out can make your time on the water much more comfortable.

Can I Rent a Kayak at Lake Acworth?

If you're looking for more than simply picking up a boat, we offer a kayak rental with a guide as part of our Lake Acworth experiences.

Your kayak, paddle, PFD and equipment are provided, and you'll have a guide on the water with you. For beginners, our Learn to Kayak experience combines instruction with a guided paddle so you can actually practice what you're learning.

There isn't one perfect time to paddle the lake.

Season, weather, wind and your own experience level matter more than simply choosing a particular hour.

A Different Side of Acworth
